Artist Statement
Brittany Davis is an Assistant Professor of Art and Design at Belhaven University where she teaches photography and graphic design. She also serves as the gallery director for Belhaven University’s Bitsy Irby Gallery. Davis received her BFA in Art from Belhaven University and her MS in Studio Art from Mississippi College. Before joining the faculty at Belhaven University, Davis taught art to children in grades K-12. In addition to her work as an educator, Davis owns her own portrait studio and enjoys exhibiting her fine art photography across the state. She is an active member of the Mississippi State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Long ago I discovered photography is my way of understanding my own story, and my home. This medium offers me clues to the past and informs my present. I am drawn to objects and places that show evidence of the humans that inhabited them and the hands that used them. Though the subjects I am drawn to are often outwardly broken or seemingly mundane, they possess a history that I can explore and relate to my own story and the larger story of humanity.
I work intuitively when photographing a space. I come with no agenda when I am working so I can more authentically respond to the space and see what the Creator would have me see. I become further acquainted with the images through each layer of the photographic process. I meet my images fully and unravel their meaning once they are printed and I can interact with them. Each aspect of making an image becomes an opportunity for observation and reflection about myself, my place in history and my role as an image bearer of Christ.
We have a creator that sees his image buried in our twisted broken hearts and sees a beautiful creation worth redeeming. My work has become about wading through the brokenness to find the beauty and opportunity for redemption that lies buried. My hope for the viewer is that my work evokes a sense of nostalgia or memory that can be used as a point of reference for them to explore their own story and find validation in it.
